Scottsdale, Arizona (April 20, 2016) -- Lawrence E. (Larry) Dewey, chairman, president and CEO of Allison Transmission, Inc., and Karl Rove, political strategist and former Deputy Chief of Staff and Senior Advisor to President George W. Bush, addressed attendees of the Truck Renting and Leasing Association's 2016 Annual Meeting on Tuesday at the Fairmont Scottsdale Princess in Scottsdale, Arizona.

At the General Assembly, Dewey's presentation highlighted Allison Transmission's 100 years in the industry. He also discussed ways to be more involved with legislation and regulation: engage early and often; educate; know your leverage; and band together.

Rove's keynote looked at the unique political landscape we are facing in the 2016 election and discussed the leading candidates running for president. He talked about the impact that this election could have on the national economy as well as how this distinctive election campaign could affect both national parties. He also discussed the history of elections to give perspective on today's circumstances. Rove then took several questions from the audience.

"TRALA was thrilled to have both Mr. Dewey and Mr. Rove speak to our membership today," said TRALA CEO Jake Jacoby. "Their expertise and vision really struck a chord with all of the attendees that took part in this exciting session."

Following the General Assembly on Tuesday morning, TRALA attendees were given a choice between two different business sessions on issues directly impacting the truck renting and leasing industry.

Many attendees heard from a panel of experts regarding the electronic logging device mandate. The panelists included Elise Chianelli of PeopleNet, Kelly Frey of Telogis, Thomas Bray of J.J. Keller & Associates, and Todd Lewis of SkyBitz and was moderated by Phil Walsh of Mack Trucks. The panelists answered a series of questions on the impact this mandate could have, particularly on rental trucks and the challenges that exist with current technology.

The second session focused its attention on the California Air Resources Board -- or CARB. Attendees learned how to be compliant with California's heavy-duty diesel vehicle regulations. Presenter Cindy Mahon of UC Davis Extension gave background on the state's truck regulations and discussed enforcement and compliance to ensure TRALA members know the latest and most pertinent information needed to effectively operate their truck companies in the state.

"The business sessions addressed two very important topics for our members today," said Jacoby. "Our industry faces regulations from both the state and federal level and so by allowing our members to speak directly to experts on these issues, it provided all the participants great value today."
