TRALA Applauds Introduction of Senate Catalytic Converter Theft Prevention Bill

TRALA and its industry allies have been working with Senators Klobuchar (D-MN) and Wyden (D-OR) on federal legislation to combat catalytic converter thefts throughout the country.

Congressman Jim Baird (R-IN) leads companion legislation in the House of Representatives. The legislation, called the PART Act would:

  • Require new vehicles to have a VIN number stamped onto the catalytic converter to allow law enforcement to track stolen parts to the vehicle from which they originate;
  • Create a grant program through which entities can stamp VIN numbers onto catalytic converters of existing vehicles;
  • Improve record keeping standards for the purchasers of used catalytic converters; and
  • Establish laws around catalytic converter thefts by codifying the crimes as a criminal offense
TRALA would like to thank both Senators and the Congressman for their leadership on this critical issue and TRALA will work to garner co-sponsors to help push the legislation for passage in Congress and ultimately to the President's desk for adoption as soon as possible.
