It is with a heavy heart that I pass along the very sad news that Terence “Terry” Dubowick passed away on Monday evening. Terry served on the TRALA Board of Directors for 17 consecutive years ending in 2016 upon his retirement from the Mack Leasing System – Volvo Truck Leasing System.
Terry began his industry career in 1982 with Hertz Penske Truck Leasing in Northern New Jersey where he was initially responsible for sales and later district management. In 1991 he joined AMI Leasing as the Metro Region Operations Manager accountable for branch locations from lower New York State through Maryland. He joined Mack Leasing System as the Northeast Region Manager in 1995 and was appointed Director in 1998. At the Mack-Volvo Systems, Terry's responsibilities included developing national accounts, handling dealer full service leases, as well as rental and contract maintenance business across the Southeast and Southwest regions of the U.S.
During his tenure as a Board Member at TRALA, Terry served in many capacities, including Finance Chairman, Nominating Committee Chairman, Vice Chairman, and as Chairman of TRALA from 2011-2012.
Terry was instrumental in two important developments at TRALA. The first was instituting the association's first political action committee, TRALAPAC, which was formed in late 2011 at his urging while he served as Chairman. Terry was adamant that the truck renting and leasing industry needed a stronger voice on Capitol Hill and his determination to adopt TRALAPAC has paid significant dividends to the industry and to TRALA's advocacy efforts over the past 6+ years. The second initiative was the industry survey which has been conducted annually since 2015 in partnership with ACT Research. Terry had long-sought more precise numbers to quantify the industry's breadth and to help in TRALA's advocacy efforts both on Capitol Hill and in the states.
These two successful missions have not only helped TRALA achieve legislative victories over the past several years, but they have also raised the industry's profile as the size and scope of TRALA's membership was realized – and the growth in leasing and renting was quantified.
For me personally, Terry was a key figure from my first month on the job working on government relations issues, to my ascension as president and CEO of TRALA more than 4 years later. He was not only a great confidante, but a real friend to me and the rest of our staff. Terry truly cared about TRALA – not just from a business perspective that would benefit Mack and Volvo – but also from an industry standpoint. Terry wanted TRALA to succeed and because of his commitment and tireless efforts, we did succeed time and time again.
All of us at TRALA want to send our deepest condolences to Terry's wife Carol and his two children, Michael and Pilar, as well as all his friends and colleagues. He will be greatly missed.
Sincerely,
Jake Jacoby
TRALA President & CEO
