ALEXANDRIA, Va. (April 24, 2018) -- The Truck Renting and Leasing Association (TRALA) condemns the senseless act of violence that claimed innocent lives and left many injured in Toronto yesterday.  As the voice of the truck renting and leasing industry, TRALA is particularly concerned when one of its members' vehicles is used in a violent event such as what happened yesterday.

TRALA represents nearly 500 trucking companies throughout North America that employ more than 57,000 people, operate from more than 25,000 locations and represent approximately 25-30% of all trucks and tractors over the road today. TRALA and its members not only take security very seriously, but we continue to partner with multiple governmental agencies to ensure our members' employees have the best information and training to help combat those that would use trucks to do harm.

"TRALA members stand in full support of law enforcement not only in the U.S. but throughout North America and we will work closely with our members and with the Ontario provincial government and law enforcement officials in Toronto to help in any way possible" said Jake Jacoby, TRALA president and CEO.  "This act of violence will not deter TRALA in its efforts to continue to coordinate with all levels of government and law enforcement in the future to do everything we can to stop crimes such as the one perpetrated yesterday.  Our thoughts and prayers are with all the victims and their loved ones." TRALA and its members have partnered with local, regional and federal law enforcement agencies such as the FBI, both directly and in meetings and seminars, to cooperate on counter-terrorism, emergency preparedness and other security issues. TRALA and its private sector members worked with the Department of Homeland Security to develop a Security Guide, which has been distributed to its entire membership, outlining the importance of counter-terrorism and security at truck rental and leasing businesses and, in particular, what could constitute a "red flag."  TRALA's efforts and policies are also guided by its Security Committee, which is comprised of security professionals, many of whom have law enforcement backgrounds. The committee continually reviews security-related updates from respected sources, including public-private partnerships, federal and local agencies.
