TRALA Touts Industry-Developed Security Program in Response to NY Legislation
SB 2532 would require truck rental companies in New York to register with the state and maintain customer records for two years, require a drivers license and one other form of identification, make meaningful assurances to verify the identity of the renter, and check customers driver's licenses against government-held terrorist watch lists.
TRALA has contacted the sponsor of SB 2532, Senator Michael Gianaris to state its belief that the legislation is not necessary because TRALA and its membership has already advanced the goals of the legislation. In a letter to Senator Gianaris, TRALA points out that it has developed and distributed thousands of copies of the security planning tool, the Truck Renting and Leasing Security Awareness and Self-Assessment Guide. This publication enables companies to assess their current security plans in the areas of management, employee information, training, vehicle and facility security, and communication. This guide has been developed in consultation with the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) and its Transportation Security Administration (TSA). A copy of the Truck Renting and Leasing Security Awareness and Self-Assessment Guide is always available here on TRALA's website.
TRALA also points out that over 180,000 copies of the federal security publication drafted jointly by TRALA and TSA, Safeguarding America's Transportation System, Security Guide for Truck Rental Company Employees have been distributed to its membership. This guide was developed to help educate truck rental company employees on how to identify potential threats and report suspicious behavior. This publication is also always available here on TRALA's website.
