The U.S. Senate approved by voice vote on May 23 the two-month extension of the highway bill that was passed by the U.S. House of Representatives.  The legislation will fund transportation projects only through July. The bill now awaits the signature of the President. FULL STORY

 

The White House has received the proposed rule from the Department of Transportation on speed limiters for heavy trucks.  The details of the rule, developed jointly by the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) and the National Highway Transportation Safety Administration (NHTSA) will not be made public until the Office of Management and Budget (OMB) reviews the estimated costs and benefits of the proposal. FULL STORY

 

The White House OMB has returned the rule, Electronic Stability Control Systems for Heavy Vehicles, to the Department of Transportation and NHTSA which moves the rulemaking that would set a federal standard that would require stability control systems on trucks and buses close to completion. Isuzu Commercial Truck of America has delivered the 500,000th Isuzu-built truck since the Isuzu brand entered the North American market in 1984.  The N-Series truck was sold to Farmers Home Furniture in Dublin, GA. . .Navistar Inc. is establishing its own 668-acre proving grounds in New Carlisle, Indiana.  The facility will have a three-mile paved and banked oval track where the OEM will test its entire portfolio of Class 5 through Class 8 commercial trucks, school buses and military vehicles. . .PeopleNet has acquired Cadec Global, a privately-held provider of driver- and truck-based platforms. . .Bridgestone Americas Tire Operations is commemorating 25 years of operations at its commercial truck and bus radial (TBR) tire manufacturing facility in Warren County, TN. . .The Freightliner Trucks Hardest Working Cities program salutes cities spearheading community growth and innovation.  The company announced Salt Lake City will be the second city to receive the award.  Indianapolis was celebrated earlier this year to kick off the program. . .Kalmar has received an order to supply a further 18 rough terrain container handlers to the U.S. Department of Defense. Destined to replace older equipment, the Kalmar RT240s will be delivered to multiple locations across the U.S. by the end of 2015. . .Penske Truck Leasing and Penske Logistics have committed to hiring several hundred U.S. military veterans and their spouses into their workforce over the next several years as part of the Hiring Our Heroes Program.

J.J. Keller & Associates, Inc. has hired Steve Bruss who will join the company's transportation consulting team. . .The University of Memphis has established the D. Mike Pennington Award for Outstanding Mentoring in its Department of Journalism.  The award honors alumnus D. Mike Pennington, Class of 1972, and is the first mentoring award in the College of Communication and Fine Arts and the first faculty award in journalism.
