TRALA
JOINS NATIONAL SAFETY COUNCIL IN HONORING
RYDER CEO GREGORY T. SWIENTON AS RECIPIENT OF
GREEN CROSS FOR SAFETY MEDAL
ALEXANDRIA, VA - May 20, 2002 - The Truck Renting and Leasing Association is proud to announce that Gregory T. Swienton, President and CEO of Ryder System, Inc., a founding TRALA member, is the 2002 recipient of the National Safety Council's Green Cross for Safety.
The National Safety Council is presenting its highest honor to Swienton for his commitment to workplace safety and corporate citizenship. Swienton is the first transportation industry executive to receive this honor.
Since joining Ryder, Swienton identified safety as one of the company's top five goals and raised the visibility of safety in the organization by creating the position of Vice President for Safety, Health and Security. Ryder's health and safety team is one of the largest organizations of its kind in the transportation industry.
"The truck renting and leasing industry places an absolute premium on
safety as a key component of our operations," said TRALA President and
CEO Peter Vroom. "The presentation of this nationally recognized award
to one of our largest members demonstrates that Ryder management and employees
'walk the walk.' Each year, truck renting and leasing companies and their
customers rank among the very top in safety and professionalism on the
road and in the workplace. We applaud Ryder and the many TRALA member
companies that work hard each day to make safety their first priority."
The Green Cross for Safety Medal will be presented to Swienton at a National Safety Council gala on May 20 at the Waldorf-Astoria Hotel in New York City. TRALA President and CEO Peter J. Vroom will represent the association at the event.
Before joining Ryder in 1999 as its president and chief operating officer, Swienton spent more than 20 years in the transportation industry with Burlington Northern Sante Fe Corporation and DHL Worldwide Express. In November 2000, Swienton was named Ryder's president and chief executive officer, and this month, he became the chairman of Ryder's Board of Directors.
